Communication approach to heritage filiation in Noyant d’Allier, former reception center for French citizens from Indochina
Résumé
The city of Noyant d'Allier is a former shelter for French citizens from Indochina where part of the repatriated population settled permanently following the Indochina War. This case puts into perspective the existing tension – from the point of view of actual inhabitants - between their duty of remembrance (of a colonial past and its meaning on citizens) and their investment in local life, connected to a feeling of belonging to the territory and being part of its heritage. This tension is determined by an “inheritor feeling” which means having inherited and having a responsibility towards those who have gifted. In other words, inhabitants feel they have to preserve, promote and share this heritage in return. This case highlights the past/present dialectic which holds every society together and which is the driving force in its continuous building process. It reflects the plurality of filiations histories for each individual. The research shows how a territory is renewed by these different filiation dynamics. It is therefore through the prism of this inheritor feeling that this work aims to analyze the way in which society reproduces itself in this movement going from the present towards the past and from the past towards the future. This meaningful relationship to time implies to think of the inheritor in a logic of “reverse filiation” as developed by Jean Davallon as part of the inheritance process. He describes the inheritor shaping himself as such and thereby choosing his ancestors and his inheritance. From this angle, and in continuity with his work, this thesis is specifically focused on the figure of the inheritor determined by the process of reverse gifting.Based on an ethno-semiotic investigation anchored in Information and Communication Sciences, this work aims to understand the way in which the figure of the inheritor is updated in society in order to understand to what extent it is a mediation between past and future and how it is an operator of societal renewal. To carry out this study, it will be necessary to go back to the very foundations of the figure of the inheritor (determined by the process of the gift which implies logics of accountability and identity reproduction); to understand the specific problems of repatriated French people from Indochina (trivialization of repatriation and lack of recognition as a “case”); and to examine the dynamics of rural community life (communitarianism and territorial attractiveness policy). From there, we can understand the way in which this figure of the inheritor crosses society and is updated in different spaces – memorial, territorial, mediatical, touristical – always grappling with these logics of preservation, transmission and identity production. This research will provide the opportunity to question the relationship that societies maintain to the past, the effects in meaning of commemorating for the second generation, and the issues of identity construction within filiations across time and space. It is therefore on the current Noyant d’ Allier territory, through the prism of this inheritor feeling and at the crossroads of here and now, there and before, parental and local filiations, and cultures from all horizons, that this investigation takes place.
La commune de Noyant d’Allier, ancien Centre d’Accueil des Français d’Indochine où une partie de la population rapatriée s’est installée définitivement à la suite de la guerre d’Indochine, met en perspective la tension existante entre un devoir de mémoire (d’un passé colonial et ses effets de sens sur ses ressortissants) ; et un investissement dans une vie locale, lié à un sentiment d’appartenance au territoire et à l’inscription dans sa filiation. Dans un cas comme dans l’autre, ce qui informe la prise de position et les pratiques, est ce sentiment d’être héritier et d’avoir hérité, soit d’avoir une responsabilité vis-à-vis de celles et ceux qui ont donné ; en d’autres termes, un sentiment de devoir préserver, valoriser et mettre en partage à son tour cet héritage. Ce cas ordinaire met en relief la dialectique passé/présent qui tient chaque société et qui est motrice dans sa production. Il rend compte de la pluralité de filiations dans lesquelles s’inscrivent les individus saisis par ce « sentiment d’héritier ». Il donne à observer la manière dont se renouvelle un territoire pris par ces différentes logiques filiales. C’est donc au prisme de ce sentiment d’héritier que ce travail se propose d’analyser la manière dont se reproduit la société dans ce mouvement allant du présent vers le passé et du passé vers le futur. Ce rapport de sens au temps suppose de penser l’héritier dans une logique de filiation inversée telle que développée par Jean Davallon dans le cadre du processus de patrimonialisation. Il décrit l’héritier comme se faisant lui-même et choisissant par-là ses ancêtres et son héritage. Sous cet angle, et dans la lignée de ses travaux, cette thèse s’intéresse spécifiquement à la figure de l’héritier informée par ce processus de don inversé.A partir d’une enquête ethno-sémiotique trouvant son ancrage en Sciences de l’Information et de la Communication, ce travail vise à saisir la manière dont la figure de l’héritier s’actualise dans la société afin de comprendre dans quelle mesure elle est une médiation entre passé et futur et en quoi elle est une opératrice du renouvellement sociétal. Pour mener à bien cette étude, il sera question de revenir sur les fondements mêmes de la figure de l’héritier (informée par un processus de don qui sous-tend des logiques de redevabilité et de reproduction identitaire) ; d’appréhender les problématiques spécifiques des Français d’Indochine rapatriés (banalisation du rapatriement et absence de reconnaissance comme « cas ») ; et d’examiner les dynamiques propres à la vie communale rurale (communautarisme et politique d’attractivité territoriale). A partir de là, nous pourrons dès lors chercher à comprendre la manière dont la figure de l’héritier traverse la société et s’actualise dans différents espaces – mémoriel, territorial, médiatique, touristique – toujours aux prises de ces logiques de préservation, transmission et production identitaire. Ce parcours donnera l’opportunité de s’interroger sur le rapport de sens que les sociétés entretiennent au passé, sur les effets de sens de la commémoration pour la seconde génération qui la conduit, et sur les enjeux de la construction identitaire à l’intérieur des filiations au travers le temps et l’espace. C’est donc sur le territoire noyantais actuel, au prisme de ce sentiment d’héritier et au croisement de l’ici et maintenant, du là-bas et l’avant, des filiations parentales et locales, et des cultures de tout horizon, que se joue cette enquête.
